Our Next Energy (ONE) Focuses on Infrastructure and Defense Batteries, Pauses Automotive EV Investments

  • ONE secures $35M in new purchase orders from rail and defense customers, targeting cash-flow breakeven in 2026

  • ONE exits automotive EV, suspending its multiyear investment in the passenger EV market

  • ONE reduces workforce by 45% in response to automotive program termination

NOVI, MI – Jan. 7, 2026Our Next Energy Inc. (ONE), a Michigan-based energy storage technology company, today announced a strategic transition of its product and manufacturing footprint to focus on rail, defense, and utility-scale energy storage systems (ESS) to enhance U.S. infrastructure resilience. As part of this shift, ONE has suspended its automotive electrification efforts, resulting in a workforce reduction of approximately 45%.

Driven by growing demand from U.S. industrial, rail, and defense customers for domestically produced batteries, the company’s renewed focus is expected to enable cash-flow breakeven by the end of 2026.

“Our business turnaround in 2025 focused on fundamentals—reducing operational costs, diversifying away from automotive EVs, and securing new purchase orders that demonstrate strong product-market fit,” said Mujeeb Ijaz, Founder and CEO of ONE. “Today’s announcement repositions ONE to engage new capital sources aligned with infrastructure and defense investment priorities.”

ONE’s Van Buren and Novi Factories Retooled and Operational

ONE’s inaugural LFP cell manufacturing facility in Van Buren Township, Michigan, now ISO 9001 Quality and UN 38.3 Safety certified, has completed retooling to produce a first-of-its-kind LFP battery cell engineered for extreme operating environments. These cells support 12-minute fast charging and can withstand prolonged exposure to deep-sea pressures, enabling use across defense drones, subsea systems, and deep-sea mining platforms.

The company’s Novi, Michigan, pack manufacturing facility, also ISO 9001 Quality certified, has been retooled to support three new rail-industry products designed to improve fuel efficiency and durability. These products are underpinned by a successful 12-month demonstration across U.S. and Canadian locomotives. The Novi facility also retains the capability to manufacture grid-scale ESS modules for utility and defense infrastructure customers.
