Job Summary

The Advanced Product Development team develops transformative battery designs and novel product concepts to speed global electric vehicle adoption and energy decarbonization.

Your focus as Thermal & Safety Engineer will be to develop and validate novel battery safety architectures. Your work will directly enable the use of cutting-edge cells with radically higher energy density & power versus conventional EV technologies. You will use a variety of analytic and computational approaches to model heat transfer and cooling, exhaust gas flows from abuse events, and other phenomena of interest. You will also lead experimental verification and iteration of your novel designs. The work you do will inform high-level architecture as well as detailed design of our next-generation pack designs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Evaluates heat transfer and cooling requirements for nominal operations and abuse events

  • Models vent gas flows and cooling for thermal runaway containment

  • Investigates and commissions required in-house testing capabilities

  • Performs experimental validation of heat transfer and cell failure models

  • Manages external test vendors when necessary

  • Identifies areas of risk and work quickly to prototype and mitigate these

  • Optimizes designs via analytical, numerical, and/or empirical assessments

  • Other duties as assigned

Within 3 months you will:

  • Helps develop test setups to iterate on and validate computational models

  • Supports pack safety and thermal design and testing

  • Supports design and fabrication of a prototype next-generation battery pack

  • Develops internal design tools and capabilities to accelerate future projects

  • Becomes familiar with the ONE team and established products

Within 6 months you will:

  • Takes ownership of advanced pack thermal and safety architecture

  • Proves out novel safety architectures in surrogate modules and packs

  • Collaborates with other system disciplines to plan and execute overall project delivery

  • Guides high-level design discussions for our current and future product concepts

Education and/or Experience

You should be familiar with all, proficient with many, and expert at some of the following, in no particular order:

  • B.S., M.S., or PhD in a related engineering field

  • Experience in modeling heat transfer and/or gas flows

  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to conceptualize and create candidate designs

  • Experience working in an R&D prototype development environment

  • Thermal management of mechanical and electrical systems

  • Proficient with rapid prototyping materials, tools, and techniques

  • Strong written/verbal communication and organizational skills

  • Experience in 3D modeling using SolidWorks or an equivalent CAD system a plus

  • 2+ years of experience in battery engineering a plus

Work Schedule

  • Full-time 40 hours and generally scheduled Monday through Friday 9am-6pm
