The Advanced Product Development team creates transformative battery designs and novel product concepts that will accelerate global electric vehicle adoption and energy decarbonization.
Your role as a Controls Engineer will focus on the architecture and development of firmware needed to integrate advanced energy storage products into road vehicles. You will generate and explore new ideas from concept to on-vehicle integration, enabling high-performance EV packs for internal and customer-driven development programs. You will pursue more effective power management algorithms, system communications strategies, and hardware implementation.
The ideal candidate will have a broad background in vehicle systems and model-based controls, with experience developing and integrating code in a variety of prototype vehicles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in defining controls architecture, platform, and functionality
Create control algorithms for systems in Matlab / Simulink / Stateflow / C
Develop and test controls performance from model to bench to vehicle
Develop and adapt automotive CAN / CANFD / ethernet communications
Author automotive J1939/UDS diagnostics and services
System Simulation and Modeling
Formulate multi-domain models of mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, and electronic systems
Analyze important performance metrics and system specifications from model results
Model correlation and validation to test data
Use models to develop and test controls algorithms
System Hardware Specification
Support design, selection, and integration of electronic components
Communicate mechanical requirements of system to design staff
Identify controller hardware to meet I/O and computational requirements
Communicate wiring and connector requirements to support harness builds
System Testing and Data Acquisition
Develop test plans and test cases
Specify instrumentation and data acquisition system
Perform test procedures; troubleshoot test environment and instrumentation
Process and analyze test data; test report generation
Provide analysis, insight, and feedback for development
Within 3 months you will:
Support the control system development of a prototype next-generation battery pack
Help develop controls models and contribute to subsystem development
Support pack-to-vehicle integration and debugging
Develop internal design tools and capabilities to accelerate future projects
Become familiar with the ONE team and established products
Within 6 months you will:
Collaboratively architect and controls schemes of follow-on pack products
Take ownership of critical subsystems and models
Collaborate with other system disciplines to plan and execute overall project delivery
Guide high-level design discussions for our current and future product concepts
Mentor junior engineers on prototyping and best practices
BS or MS in Automotive, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering
2-5 years experience, preferably in automotive, electric vehicles
Experience with Matlab/Simulink for embedded control systems development a must
Development software and tools for embedded systems (OpenECU/MotoTron/MotoHawk, dSPACE MABX, Vector CANape/CANalyzer)
Embedded C code development capability
Familiarity with communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet, LIN, Wireless 802.11, DSRC)
Data acquisition hardware and software experience
Vehicle and system troubleshooting experience
Electric and Hybrid vehicle architecture
Electrical/Mechanical/Hydraulic/Pneumatic system design, control, and simulation
Vehicle and platform robotics experience
Experience in dynamic modeling, machine learning and statistical algorithm design
Experience in developing and validating state estimation using EKFs or similar
Functional Safety / ASPICE development experience
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and must be able to design and conduct complex experiments.
Experience working in an R&D prototype development environment
Strong written/verbal communication and organizational skills
