The Advanced Engineering & Research team develops transformative battery designs and novel product concepts to speed global electric vehicle adoption and energy decarbonization.
Your focus as a Cell Development Engineer will be to develop and scale new cell technologies to radically improve energy density, power, safety, and/or cost vs. conventional EV technologies. Your work will take advantage of ONE’s unique hybrid pack architecture and high power-density DCDC converter, which enable the use of cells with significantly reduced life, power, and temperature requirements, accelerating the time to market of new cell and materials technologies. You will lead projects in all areas of cell research and development, including: cell evaluation and characterization, development of new cell technologies, managing both internal and external programs for cell development and scale-up for new pack products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Evaluates and select the most promising material and cell technologies from vendors for use in ONE packs.
Establishes and manages in-house and vendor programs for the development and scale-up of new cell technologies.
Leads development of new cell architectures and designs, enabled by ONE’s unique hybrid pack architecture and DCDC converter technologies.
Supports pack, safety, and battery management system development by characterizing cell performance and failure modes.
Supports continuous improvement to battery cell production processes and equipment
Works with our manufacturing team to scale cells for prototyping, pilot, and production.

Within 3 months you will:
Establishes SOPs for cell characterization
Identifies promising cell technologies for ONE’s hybrid pack architecture
Initiates one or more projects for new or optimized cell technologies for ONE’s products
Becomes familiar with the ONE team and established products
Within 6 months you will:
Takes ownership of cell development and selection for one or more cell or pack programs
Validates improved cells in large format (>10 Ah) and surrogate modules
Establishes a roadmap and R&D plan for radical improvement in cell performance
Education and/or Experience
You should be familiar with all, proficient with many, and expert at some of the following, in no particular order:
B.S., M.S. or PhD in a related field
Proven track record in development or characterization of new cell technologies
Experience in cell fabrication and characterization; experience working with large format (>10 Ah) cells is a plus
Comfortable working in a fast-paced R&D environment
Strong written/verbal communication and organizational skills
